Streak apps
There is no streak to break
Who this is for
You want a record, not a chain that punishes a miss.
What streak apps are good at
Streak apps are honest about what they sell. They sell showing up. Miss a day and the chain breaks. I understood the pull of that.
When I started writing wins, I put them on a random Twitter account that was not connected to my name. I was not building an audience. I just needed somewhere to put the lines, and a technically public place gave me a little accountability.
I do not think streaks are evil.
Where it failed
The difference is what the app does when you miss. A streak treats the miss as breakage. In a stretch where every day was more bad news, and the nights were worse, I did not need a ritual that punished me for skipping it. I was already doing that job myself.
I think they are a bad fit for a stretch where you are already punishing yourself.
A streak takes a small useful thing and gives it another way to become a failure. Miss Monday and now Tuesday begins with a broken number. Disappear for two weeks and the empty space starts to feel like something I have to explain. I do not want to explain it.
Streak apps vs 3 Wins
| Trait | Streak apps | 3 Wins |
|---|---|---|
| What they sell | Streak apps Showing up | 3 Wins A record of what already happened |
| If you miss | Streak apps The chain breaks | 3 Wins Nothing happens |
| When you write | Streak apps To keep the ritual alive | 3 Wins After the day |
| A miss means | Streak apps Breakage | 3 Wins You can disappear and come back |
| Score | Streak apps A streak | 3 Wins None |
Keep the other tool
The streak can stay. I have broken streaks. None of that was stupid.
What 3 Wins is instead
Nothing happens. There is no message saying I forgot yesterday. The gap is not a failure. It is just a gap. I can come back, write one line. Had lunch. That counts.
The app does not score them. No badges, points, or completion percentages. No punishment disguised as encouragement because I forgot yesterday.
3 Wins is that notebook. Private. Things that already went right. One line, or three, or twenty. You can disappear for two weeks and come back. Nothing happens if you miss a day. No badges. No feed. You write after the day, not before it.
