When the day is already awful
What to write when nothing went right, and why a win is not a mood.
There is a specific problem with a bad day, and it is not the bad day.
It is that by nine at night the bad day has eaten everything else. You know things happened. You cannot name one of them.
When I was in the worst of it — creditors, lawyers, liquidators, court appointments, a new problem every time the phone rang — that is what the evenings did. The whole day would collapse into the worst thing in it.
Some days the win was: woke up
That was it. That was the entire list.
I was not trying to make waking up sound like an achievement. I was trying to write down one thing that had actually happened, on a day that was otherwise bad news. If I did not write it, the rest of the day would have erased it.
Another day: had time to eat lunch. Most days I did not have time, so lunch counted.
Sometimes: played with my daughter. That was a big one.
There is no official list. If it mattered to you that day, it counts.
A win is not a mood
This is the part that matters most, and the part people get wrong about it.
Writing "had lunch" did not make the creditors disappear. It did not make the legal problems less real. It did not mean I had secretly had a good day.
It meant I played with my daughter.
Both things were true. The day was bad. Lunch also happened. I was not trying to replace the truth with a nicer version of it — the truth was that things were really bad, and the truth was also that I had lunch.
That distinction mattered to me more than anything else about this.
Gratitude asks you to feel something about your situation. Plenty of those nights I could not. What I could do was notice that lunch had happened.
What the notebook refuses to do
It does not score the lines. It does not ask you to classify them. It does not tell you that getting out of bed is smaller than closing a major deal.
It could not do it honestly if it tried. It does not know what the day cost you. It does not know whether lunch was easy, or whether lunch meant finding twenty quiet minutes between a lawyer and a liquidator. It does not know whether playing with my daughter was the only good part of the day.
So it does not try.
If tonight was awful
Write the one thing that also happened.
Woke up. Had lunch. Got through the meeting. Answered the lawyers.
One line is enough. You do not have to find three, and you do not have to make the day sound better than it was.
Skip tomorrow if you want. Nothing happens.
The bad parts do not stop being the bad parts. They stop being the only record.
This happened too.

Gratitude helped. Then it became another thing you had failed to do.
