How to start tonight
Tonight, write one line.
That is enough.
Do not wait until you can find three. Three is not a rule.
When I started, some days the only line I could write was:
Woke up.
That counted.
Another day:
Had lunch.
That counted too.
The rest of the day might have been creditors, lawyers, liquidators, court, panic attacks, and more bad news. Lunch did not fix any of it.
But lunch happened.
Sometimes I wrote:
Played with my daughter.
That counted.
I started because the bad parts of the day were erasing everything else. The gratitude recordings helped sometimes, but I usually reached for them when things were already really bad.
Writing one win gave me a record.
Later, during a completely different kind of year, I needed that record again.
I was building with AI, burning through tokens and quotas, and getting a ridiculous amount done. But at night, my head skipped past everything I had finished and went straight to the next ten things.
So the line could be small.
Or it could be something I shipped.
Both years counted. The shit year and the productive year.
I once put my wins on a random Twitter account because I needed somewhere to keep them. Now I keep them private.
No audience.
No score.
No need to make the day sound better than it was.
If tonight was awful, write the one thing that also happened.
Woke up.
Had lunch.
Played with my daughter.
Skip tomorrow if you want. Nothing happens.
Come back in two weeks and write another line.
It is not a streak. It is not gratitude homework. It is not another quota.
It is just a record.
Tonight, one line is enough.
